My daughters face is changing. She’s getting older. My younger one still has the soft baby cheeks, the ones that when she smiles creates the cutest little dimples. Her face still begs the years of babbling, and sounding out words wrong like “tree” for three and “bacoom” for vacuum and not always being 100% sure footed. A little off balance and a lot adorable.
But my oldest, she’s five. She’s confident in her steps, skips even, and her words are not pieced together broken phrases but thoughtful, clever, and most times comical conversations. She’s changing and it’s breaking my heart.
You know the place I see it most? In her sweet face. Her button nose no longer stunted but leaner and more defined. And those cheeks? Well, gone are the days of dimples. Cheek bones that become pink and rosey in the windy cold. Even her chin is more pronounced.
She’s getting older. And her face is changing. And she’s beautiful. And it’s heartbreaking.
I never want to forget it.
