The Photo Guide

How to take a perfect photo

A great silhouette starts with a great photograph. The details that make your child recognizable — the slope of their nose, the shape of their lips, the way their hair falls — all come from the quality of your profile shot.

Follow these tips and you’ll give us the best possible foundation for your keepsake.

True side profile (90°)

Stand directly to the side — not at a three-quarter angle. Try aiming for the ear when snapping the photo. We need to see one full eye, the nose, lips, and chin.

Eye-level with the camera

Crouch down to your child's level. Shooting from above or below distorts the proportions and doesn't capture their true profile.

Show nose, lips, and neckline

Make sure hair, clothing, or accessories aren't covering the nose, lips, or chin. These details are what make your silhouette uniquely recognizable.

Good natural lighting

Stand near a window or go outside. Avoid harsh overhead lighting or flash — soft, even light gives us the clearest details to work with.

Simple, uncluttered background

A plain wall or sky works perfectly. Busy backgrounds make it harder to see the edges of the profile clearly.

Hair Matters

Let the hair tell the story

Hair is one of the most personal parts of a silhouette. Think about how your child typically wears their hair — that’s the version you’ll want to capture.

If its down with defined curls, or up in a messy bun, just make sure to capture it the way you see them most.

If you have sweet adornments in the hair, like bows, make sure they are very clearly visible or they may ned up looking shapeless.

Hair down — bouncy curls
Hair up — messy bun
Hair adornments — bows
Hair half up — waterspouts & pulled back
Short hair — boys
Babies — Little hairs or neck curls

Have a Wiggly Toddler?

We get it — toddlers aren’t known for sitting still. Here’s our best trick: have someone hold them on their lap facing sideways to a window, then hold a phone or tablet with their favorite show slightly to the side at eye level. They’ll lock onto the screen just long enough for you to snap the shot.

A little bribery goes a long way. Snacks, songs, bubbles — whatever works. We only need one good shot.
