It had already been a hectic day. The never ending dishes were pilling as you attempt to fill the dish washer, the phone notifications triggering in your back pocket reminding you of the rest of the responsibilities and the screaming from the other room was a pretty sure fire indicator that someone was about to get hurt.
You begin to shout, “Please be careful!” when suddenly you’re interrupted by a loud crash, 2 seconds of silence and the all piercing and nerve shattering cry of a child in distress.
Scampering feet head in your direction as you set the dishes aside, for the 3rd time that morning, to tend to the ailing.
Between tears and sobs, you listen as patiently as the angels allow, to the recounting of a story you’ve heard many times before. You find yourself repeating the same words you probably said yesterday. It doesn’t ebb the sobbing. She’s not listening. She just wants you.
Picking her up, you push aside the papers and random odds and ends that end up on kitchen counters and set her down to examine the “boo boo”. As you glance back up at her, you catch a quick glimpse of her baby face captured in her silhouette print hanging on the wall behind her.
Closing your eyes, you take a deep breath as a slight smile crosses your tired, crows feet face.
“Do you want me to kiss it?”
She looks up at you with those big, wild, brown eyes filled with crocodile tears and nods her head slowly. You bend down and kiss the boo boo. Just like when she was a baby. Making it all better.
